Biotin (Vitamin B7) Warning

The FDA recently issued a warning regarding Biotin (Vitamin B7) supplements and their interference with lab tests.

Patients who consume high levels of Biotin (found in dietary supplements) can have  lab results that are inaccurate.  Biotin causes lab reports to be falsely high or low, depending on the type of test.  These incorrect results may lead to a misdiagnosis or mismanagement of a patient’s treatment.

Many dietary supplements, especially those marketed for hair, skin, and nail health can contain as much as 650 percent more than the FDA recommended daily allowance of Biotin.

Biotin can be found in:

  • Multi-vitamins
  • Prenatal Vitamins
  • Dietary Supplements for hair, skin, and nails.

Important tips for our patients:

  1. Please advise your doctor if you are taking ANY dietary supplements or vitamins with Biotin (Vitamin B7).
  2. If you have upcoming blood work scheduled, please STOP taking any dietary supplements with Biotin (Vitamin B7) for at least 72 hours prior to your blood draw.

If you are a patient and have any questions regarding your use of Biotin supplements, please contact our office at 813-914-7304.
